Hole 1

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 409m | Medal Tees: 409m | Red Tees: 354m

The hardest hole on the golf course. A line left of the distant cypress tree is best and will give you a look at the green. Hidden bunkers on the right are in play if you cut the corner. A difficult green to hit with ‘the valley of sin’ at the front and surrounded by deep bunkers. Par this hole and you are off to a great start to your round!

Hole 2

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 380m | Medal Tees: 365m | Red Tees: 319m

This hole is a solid test of golf and you will need to be on your game to walk away with a par. From an elevated tee hit a solid straight drive, avoiding the bunkers on both sides of the fairway to give yourself a good look at the green. The approach shot into this hole has to be equally as good as you are hitting uphill to a heavily bunkered green. Make a 4 here and you will be feeling pretty good about yourself!

Hole 3

/ Par 3

Black Tees: 148m | Medal Tees: 135m | Red Tees: 124m

A thrilling short Par 3 played across the top of a ridge where the wind will often try to drag tee shots right into the valley. Take dead aim or play for the left side of the green where the bank feeds all shots here back in. A two tiered green that is relatively easy when the pin is at the bottom but much tougher when it’s on top.

Hole 4

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 310m | Medal Tees: 310m | Red Tees: 285m

A magnificent short par 4 that seems easy until you play it! Best line is over bunkers (225m carry) straight ahead or play short of them with a lay up. Plenty of room left but then very tough second to shallow green. The approach shot into a narrow two tiered green requires accuracy or you will fall short or go long. Hit through the green here and you will faced with a tough shot to get it back. A hole where you can make an easy birdie or an easy bogey.

Hole 5

/ Par 5

Black Tees: 473m | Medal Tees: 473m | Red Tees: 442m

Start with a blind tee shot and rip a drive over the big dune. If you have hit a good drive you will be tempted to go for the green in two. However the twisting fairway has bunkers down the right side and there are a couple of bunkers on the left and the out of bounds fence line. If you can’t get there in two then laying up requires accuracy. Play this hole with precision and you will be rewarded. Execute your shots poorly and it will gobble you up!

Hole 6

/ Par 3

Black Tees: 208m | Medal Tees: 193m | Red Tees: 180m

A controversial hole because good golfers find club selection difficult. Plenty of holes in Scotland and Ireland like this. Steeply downhill, it’s a short 200m. Huge green with water hazard at rear. Left edge is a safe line. This hole calls for the golfer to really think about what shot to play and the pin position can change the way you play your shot. It’s best to go down 1 or 2 clubs and use the contours to run the ball towards the hole. True links style!

Hole 7

/ Par 5

Black Tees: 521m | Medal Tees: 477m | Red Tees: 443m

A great Par 5 that rewards a bold tee shot down the left side over the heavily bunkered hill. Driveline is the stone cairn into a broad valley. Watch out for Tom Watson’s bunker at 250m from tee. Play to the left side of the fairway with your second shot to give yourself the best angle to the pin. It’s a large undulating green so use the slopes to work the ball into the hole. A fun hole that rewards those who want to be creative in their shot making.

Hole 8

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 392m | Medal Tees: 392m | Red Tees: 378m

One of the great holes at The Dunes. Bite off as much of the corner as you dare with your tee shot. You need to avoid the big, deep bunkers that run down the left side of the hole. Miss it to the right and you will have a very long second shot along a ridge line. The green is best approached from the right side to make use of the natural contours – safer than the left side which is guarded by bunkers. Make a par here and you will feel like you have picked up a shot on the field!

Hole 9

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 376m | Medal Tees: 376m | Red Tees: 337m

A good tee shot will really make a difference on this hole. Avoid the left side of the fairway off the tee as there are bunkers that will cost you shots. The broad green is defended by its many undulations, it’s not easy to get the ball in close. A great hole with a stunning clubhouse just behind the green and many onlookers watching you craft a score!

Hole 10

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 355m | Medal Tees: 340m | Red Tees: 301m

The tee shot is uphill to a sharp dogleg. A big drive left over the corner will put you in the valley below with a short approach but if it falls short deep bunkers will eat you up if you take them on! The approach is downhill but don’t go long as the green slopes from back to front and is very, very quick. A tricky hole, you’ll need to put on your thinking cap with this one.

Hole 11

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 312m | Medal Tees: 300m | Red Tees: 291m

A short Par 4 dog leg to the right that seems easy but the monster dune on the corner provides a testing defence. Try to avoid the bunkers on the right side of the fairway off the tee. If you are long enough you can take them on and try get close to the green. Miss it right and you will pay the price. The approach shot is to a large open two tiered green that is firm and quick. Ensure you have enough club to reach the centre of the green and you will give yourself a good look at a birdie.

Hole 12

/ Par 5

Black Tees: 537m | Medal Tees: 502m | Red Tees: 430m

A super Par 5 that is one of the best long holes you will ever play. If you play for the roll and slope of the dunes you will be rewarded. Play a little to the right side of the fairway off the tee and the ball will feed back to the fairway. The second shot will need some nerve as you will have to hit over the wasteland that just looks brutal! Play more to the left than you think as the slope works the ball to the right and back to the middle of the fairway. Don’t be too greedy with the approach shot – play for the middle as it is a difficult green to hit – you will need to work the short game magic if you miss it.

Hole 13

/ Par 3

Black Tees: 160m | Medal Tees: 160m | Red Tees: 144m

This is one of the tougher short tee shots you will ever play. To hit the green tucked in the dell you will need to fly the ball all the way. Watch out for the nasty pot bunker on the right rear flank and the bunkers protecting the green on the left are equally as menacing.

“This is certainly one of the best par threes I have ever played”Nick faldo (6 majors)

Hole 14

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 354m | Medal Tees: 354m | Red Tees: 315m

Play this hole from one of the most spectacular tee boxes on the course. You can take on the corner but those who miss left are punished by a large wasteland bunker. Depending on the wind the uphill approach to the green can be 1 or 2 clubs more than the yardage suggests. Visually a beautiful hole that requires precision.

Hole 15

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 431m | Medal Tees: 392m | Red Tees: 370m

One of two new holes, this is a great links hole which requires vision and creativity. Get off well from the tee, no bail outs here, you have to hit it straight. If you are long enough you can ride the slopes and get to the bottom of the hill. The percentage approach shot is not aimed to the middle of the green but to the left bank. Hit it here and the ball will feed back naturally to the centre of the green. A super fun hole because you can play it so many ways!

Hole 16

/ Par 5

Black Tees: 505m | Medal Tees: 505m | Red Tees: 458m

The other new hole, this Par 5 will add in the drama to your day! Be tempted to bomb a big drive to get home in two by hugging the left side of the fairway over a big wasteland bunker if you have what it takes! A good drive will allow you to have a go at the green with the second shot. Play it down the left side and it will work back to the green. More sensible golfers play right off the tee but the second shot will be tricky as you have to avoid bunkers on both sides. A huge green sloping back to front with many tricky undulations.

Hole 17

/ Par 3

Black Tees: 179m | Medal Tees: 179m | Red Tees: 146m

A great Par 3 that can make or break a good round of golf! A well guarded, heavily bunkered, elevated green does not give you many options here. The best shot is to hit it high and try to land it as soft as possible. Just hitting this green is an achievement in itself.

“This is an exquisite golf hole”Tom Watson (8 majors).

Need we say more – a spectacular par 3.

Hole 18

/ Par 4

Black Tees: 409m | Medal Tees: 370m | Red Tees: 346m

A great finishing hole for your round. From an elevated tee hit a solid drive down the middle into a beautiful natural valley. The uphill approach on this hole has teeth. A safe second shot aims to the left centre of the green to avoid catching a bunker. Walk away with a par 4 here and you feel satisfied that you passed the test!
